How to Clean AirPods Pro Ear Tips Without Damaging the Fit

If your AirPods Pro ear tips look dull, feel slippery, or have visible earwax around the opening, the goal is not to make them look brand-new at any cost. A good result is simpler: the removable tips should be visibly clean, completely dry, undamaged, securely clicked back onto the earbuds, and still able to give you a comfortable seal.

Apple's current guidance is straightforward. Remove the ear tips, rinse the tips with water, do not use soap or other household cleaners, wipe them with a soft dry lint-free cloth, let them dry completely, then align each oval tip and click it back into place. This article follows that procedure and explains how to judge the result, when to stop cleaning, and when replacement is the better next step.

The instructions below were checked against Apple's current AirPods Pro cleaning guidance, published February 2, 2026. AirPods Pro models differ, and Apple says ear tips are not interchangeable between AirPods Pro generations, so confirm your model before buying replacements.

What a successful cleaning should accomplish

Before you start, it helps to define what “clean” means. You are looking for four practical signs:

• The silicone or silicone-foam surface no longer has visible loose wax, sweat residue, or grime.
• The tip is fully dry inside and out before it goes back on the AirPod.
• The tip is not torn, stretched, warped, or separating from its internal structure.
• After reattachment, the tip sits firmly on the oval connector and does not come off with a gentle tug.

Cleaning cannot repair a torn tip, restore permanently deformed material, or guarantee a better acoustic seal if the size is wrong. If the tip is physically damaged or still fits poorly after cleaning and reinstallation, changing the tip or size is usually more appropriate than repeating the cleaning cycle.

• Clean water
• A soft, dry, lint-free cloth
• A clean, dry surface where the tips can finish drying

That is all Apple specifies for cleaning the removable ear tips themselves. Do not add dish soap, hand soap, alcohol, peroxide, household cleaner, or another chemical to the water. Apple explicitly says not to use soap or other household cleaners on the ear tips.

This is also different from Apple's cleaning procedure for certain AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3 meshes. Apple separately describes a micellar-water process for those specific meshes. Do not automatically apply that mesh-cleaning method to the removable ear tips.

How to clean AirPods Pro ear tips

1. Remove each ear tip from the AirPod

Hold the AirPod securely in one hand. With the other hand, grip the ear tip at its base, where it attaches to the earbud, and pull it straight off with steady pressure. Apple says you can roll the soft outer edge slightly inside out or use a clean lint-free cloth for extra grip if the tip is difficult to hold.

Avoid yanking on only the thin outer silicone edge. Pulling from the base gives you better control and reduces the chance of stretching the tip.

2. Check the tip before you rinse it

Take a few seconds to inspect the ear tip. Look for tears, a distorted opening, material that has become unusually loose, or damage around the attachment point. Cleaning makes sense when the problem is residue. It is less useful when the part itself is damaged.

Also confirm that you are cleaning only the removable tip. The earbud body should not be placed under running water. Apple warns against running AirPods Pro under water and against using sharp objects or abrasive materials on them.

3. Rinse the detached ear tips with water

Rinse each removed ear tip with clean water. You can let water pass over the tip and through its opening to carry away loose residue. Keep the AirPods themselves away from the rinse area.

Do not use soap or another household cleaner. This is one of the most important distinctions in Apple's instructions. Extra detergent does not make the official ear-tip process more thorough; it simply moves you outside the manufacturer's recommended method.

If residue does not release immediately, rinse again gently rather than scraping at the opening with a pin, knife, or other hard object. If a stubborn deposit remains and you are uncertain whether the tip can be safely cleaned further, replacement is a lower-risk option than aggressive cleaning.

4. Wipe the ear tips and let them dry completely

Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to wipe each ear tip. Pay attention to the inside of the opening and the attachment area, where a small amount of water can remain hidden.

“Completely dry” is the important standard here. Do not judge only by the outside surface. If you can still see moisture inside the opening or around the connector area, give the tip more time to dry before reinstalling it.

5. Align the oval connector and click the ear tip back on

AirPods Pro ear tips have an oval attachment shape. Line the tip up with the oval connector on the AirPod and press it on from the base until you feel or hear it click into place.

After it clicks on, give the ear tip a gentle tug. Apple recommends this check to confirm that the tip is secure. If it comes off easily, remove it and try again rather than pushing it on at an angle.

How to tell whether the cleaning worked

A useful self-check takes less than a minute. Look at the tips under good light. Their surfaces should be free of obvious loose residue, and no moisture should remain around the opening or base. Press lightly around the tip and make sure the material returns to shape rather than staying folded or distorted.

Then check the mechanical fit. The ear tip should sit evenly on the AirPod and remain attached when you give it a gentle tug. When you wear the AirPods, the fit should feel snug and comfortable rather than loose or painfully tight.

If your reason for cleaning was weaker bass, poorer noise cancellation, or a seal that suddenly seems different, cleaning the ear tips is only one possible fix. Apple provides an Ear Tip Fit Test for AirPods Pro 1 and AirPods Pro 2, and an Acoustic Seal Test for AirPods Pro 3. A clean tip that still fails to provide a good seal may simply be the wrong size or may need replacement.

When cleaning is no longer the right solution

Change your approach when the problem is physical rather than cosmetic. Consider replacing the ear tip when you notice any of the following:

• A tear, split, or permanent deformation
• A tip that no longer clicks securely onto the connector
• Material that stays stretched or collapses abnormally
• A fit that remains loose or uncomfortable after correct reattachment
• A poor seal that persists after cleaning, repositioning, and trying the appropriate fit test

Apple notes that AirPods Pro generations use different ear-tip designs and that the tips are not interchangeable between models. AirPods Pro 1, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods Pro 3 also ship with different size ranges. Use the replacement tips intended for your exact model.

What not to do

• Do not rinse the AirPods Pro earbuds themselves under running water.
• Do not use soap or household cleaners on the removable ear tips.
• Do not reinstall the tips while they are still wet.
• Do not use sharp or abrasive tools around the earbuds or connectors.
• Do not force an ear tip onto the connector if the oval shapes are not aligned.
• Do not assume ear tips from one AirPods Pro generation will fit another.

What if sweat or another product got on the ear tips?

After workouts, heavy sweating, or exposure to products such as shampoo, makeup, sunscreen, or lotion, cleaning and drying your AirPods Pro is especially important. Apple notes that keeping the device and your skin clean and dry can improve comfort and reduce the chance of long-term device damage or skin irritation.

If irritation develops, stop wearing the AirPods until the issue is resolved. Persistent skin irritation is not something additional ear-tip cleaning can diagnose or treat.

A practical maintenance routine

You do not need to wash the ear tips on a rigid schedule if they remain visibly clean and comfortable. Instead, use condition-based maintenance. Wipe and inspect them after sweaty workouts, and rinse them when visible residue accumulates or the tips feel dirty.

The main quality check is not frequency; it is the outcome. Clean tips should be dry, intact, securely attached, and comfortable. If they meet those conditions, there is little reason to keep cleaning them repeatedly.
