1. Unplug the iron and inspect the soleplate

Rowenta sells a soleplate cleaning kit intended to remove buildup from clothing, starch, or melted synthetic fibers, and says it can be used on all types of its listed soleplates. Philips also documents a soleplate cleaning stick for scorched fabric or impurities. 8. Test on an old white cotton cloth

Once the iron is dry, refill or operate it only as the manual directs. Heat it to an appropriate setting and test it on an old white cotton cloth before using it on clothing you care about. What if melted synthetic fabric is stuck to the soleplate?

Melted synthetic fibers are one of the hardest forms of burnt buildup because the residue can become plastic-like. Do not pry it off with a blade. If a cool damp cloth does not lift it, a manufacturer-approved soleplate cleaner is the safer next step. Rowenta specifically describes its cleaner as suitable for buildup from clothes, starch, and melted synthetic fibers.

If the residue has fused into a damaged coating rather than sitting on top of it, cleaning may not restore the original glide. That is the limit of home cleaning: it can remove contamination, but it cannot rebuild a worn or delaminated soleplate.

What if the soleplate looks clean but still stains clothes?
