Limescale in an electric kettle is easy to overlook until the bottom develops a rough, whitish coating, the kettle becomes noisier, or heating seems slower than before. The right solution isn't to scrub hard, but to dissolve the limescale using a method approved by the manufacturer for your specific kettle.
The most important decision comes before the actual descaling: Find the model number and check the user manual. Some manufacturers allow white vinegar or citric acid, while others recommend a specific descaling agent. Philips, for example, describes a vinegar method for a range of electric kettles, but the manufacturer's specific model guide should always take precedence.
Limescale deposits are related to the water's content of calcium and magnesium. When water is heated repeatedly, minerals can settle as a solid coating on the heating surface and the inside of the kettle. How quickly this happens depends primarily on local water hardness and how often the kettle is used.
GEUS states that hardness varies significantly throughout Denmark. Their updated map of drinking water hardness from September 18, 2024, is based on calcium and magnesium content and shows conditions by supply area. First, look into a cold and empty kettle. Visible white or grayish deposits on the bottom and along the sides are the clearest sign. Other signs can include longer boiling times, more noise, or loose limescale particles in the water. The limescale filter at the spout can also collect deposits and should be checked.

The safest general rule is simple: Use the method stated in the user manual. A commercial descaling agent is a good choice when the packaging explicitly states that it can be used for electric kettles and the kettle's material. Follow the dosage on the product instead of improvising a stronger mixture.
White vinegar may be suitable when the manufacturer allows it. Philips' Danish support describes a method using white vinegar with 8% acetic acid for supported models. This concentration is important: do not use a random stronger acid or a cleaning product just because it also contains acetic acid. Philips also mentions citric acid as an alternative if you dislike the smell of vinegar, but without a universal dosage on the support page. Therefore, the dosage from your own manual or from an approved descaling product is the best starting point.
The following eight steps are based on Philips' Danish support procedure and have been made more practical to follow. This method is not a substitute for your model's manual. If the manual says something different, follow it.
Start with a cold, empty electric kettle. Look for coatings on the bottom, sides, and possibly the heating element. Then find the model number and confirm that vinegar can be used. If the manufacturer only recommends a specific agent, stop here and use that instead.
Remove the kettle from the base and ensure that the plug, cord, and contact surfaces are dry. During normal cleaning, the base and electrical parts must not be submerged in water. Philips' procedure starts with water. Fill the kettle with water to approximately three-quarters of the maximum mark. Never exceed the MAX mark, because there must be room for the vinegar later.

Place the kettle correctly on the base, connect it, and boil the water as usual. Let the automatic shut-off engage. Avoid opening the lid or leaning over the spout while the water and steam are very hot.

When the kettle has turned off, add the white vinegar allowed by your manufacturer. In Philips' documented example, it is white vinegar with 8% acetic acid that is filled up to the MAX mark. Pour slowly to avoid splashes from hot water. Do not use this concentration as a general rule for other models; always follow their manual.

Philips recommends in the described method to let the vinegar mixture sit overnight. Place the kettle stably, out of reach of children, and leave it undisturbed. There is usually no benefit to boiling the vinegar mixture again unless your own user manual explicitly says so.

The next day, pour the mixture out into the sink and rinse the kettle thoroughly inside with clean water. If the kettle has a removable limescale filter, it may require separate cleaning. Fill the kettle with clean water, boil it, and pour it out. Philips recommends this final rinse after the vinegar method, and in some manuals, the boiling is repeated to remove vinegar residues. Do not use the first rinse water for tea or coffee. When the kettle has cooled, the inside should appear significantly cleaner, without a clear vinegar smell or loose residues. If limescale remains, the procedure can be repeated if the manufacturer allows it.

There is no single interval that fits all homes. As a manufacturer example, Philips recommends descaling approximately every third month for normal use up to five times a day with water up to 18 °dH, and approximately once a month with water over 18 °dH. This is a model guide, not a new official classification of Danish water hardness.
GEUS uses broader hardness categories, where among other things, 12-18 °dH is designated as fairly hard and 18-24 °dH as hard. The most useful thing in practice is therefore to combine your local hardness with what you actually see in the kettle. If the bottom develops clear coatings long before the calendar says it is time, you should descale more often.

Let the kettle cool down and look into it in good light. A successful descaling does not necessarily mean the metal looks factory-new, but the rough, chalky coatings should be gone or clearly reduced. Boiling should occur normally, and the water should not smell or taste of vinegar. Also check the limescale filter if the kettle has one.
If the limescale still sits as a thick layer after correct treatment, it is better to repeat an approved descaling than to switch to sharper tools or stronger chemicals. If the kettle leaks, has damaged electrical parts, or continues to behave abnormally after descaling, it should not be used until the problem has been assessed according to the manufacturer's instructions.
