What Ranks Can Play Together in Valorant? Party Rules Explained

What ranks can play together in Valorant? For a duo or trio, your lowest-ranked player determines the highest rank allowed. A full five-player party can mix any ranks, although Rank Rating reductions may apply. Four-player parties cannot enter Competitive.

Rules checked against Riot Games sources on November 1, 2026. This article covers the standard Competitive queue; the Radiant RR documentation conflict is explained below.

Illustrative example: Alex is Silver 2, Sam is Gold 1, and Jordan is Platinum 2. They want to play together tonight. Two more friends, Casey at Bronze 3 and Morgan at Diamond 1, might join later. These fictional players show how the rules work; they are not a report of an actual match or test.

Valorant rank restrictions for duos and trios

Find the lowest rank in your party, then use this chart from Riot's Competitive Mode FAQ. The ceiling applies to the whole party.

Lowest rank in the partyHighest rank allowed
Iron or BronzeSilver 3
SilverGold 3
GoldPlatinum 3
Platinum or higherUp to three numbered divisions above the lowest player; Platinum 2 to Diamond 2, for example

Alex and Sam can duo: Silver 2 and Gold 1 fit the chart. Adding Jordan makes their trio ineligible because Platinum 2 exceeds Alex's Silver-based ceiling. Sam's middle rank does not bridge that gap. Likewise, Bronze and Gold cannot duo, even though Bronze and Silver can.

How the numbered divisions work at higher ranks

Do not ignore the number after the rank name. Platinum 2 to Diamond 2 spans three division steps: Platinum 3, Diamond 1, then Diamond 2. Platinum 2 to Diamond 3 goes too far. Riot describes the corresponding Ascendant restriction as three ranks above or below in Patch 5.0.

Immortal 1 and above have an additional party-size restriction: they can play solo, duo, or in a five-stack, but cannot trio. Being close enough in rank does not remove that restriction.

Why four players cannot queue, but five can

If Casey joins Alex, Sam, and Jordan, the group now has four players. They still cannot enter Competitive: Riot removed four-player parties to improve the experience of the solo teammate who would otherwise fill the remaining slot. This change is documented in Patch 3.10.

Once Morgan joins, all five fictional friends can queue together despite their Bronze-to-Diamond spread. A five-stack means five players entering matchmaking as one party. It removes the usual rank-gap restriction; it does not guarantee a quick match or equal skill across the team.

Five-stacks face other five-stacks, so allow extra time for matchmaking. For this group, the practical decision is whether playing together matters more than maximizing RR progress that evening.

Five-stack RR reductions explained

Rank Rating (RR) tracks ranked progress. Riot's Patch 4.08 adjusted five-stack RR gains and losses, while Patch 5.0 moved the automatic 25% threshold to Immortal 1. Read those changes alongside the current FAQ:

Five-player partyPublished RR reduction
Everyone is Iron through Ascendant 3 and within normal grouping limitsNo reduction from these five-stack rules
Everyone is Ascendant 3 or below, but the group exceeds normal rank-gap limits25% for the party
At least one Immortal player, with no Radiant player25% for the party
At least one Radiant player75% stated; see the mixed-Radiant caveat below

Alex's five-player group falls into the second row. As a simplified arithmetic example, a 25% reduction would turn an otherwise 20-point change into 15 points. This is not a prediction of anyone's actual match reward. A five-stack reduction also does not mean that every five-player group automatically receives less RR.

The mixed-Radiant documentation caveat

Riot's official pages conflict here. The FAQ gives a 75% Radiant reduction but also says a group containing a below-Radiant player has a 90% reduction in potential RR. Patch 4.08 instead specifies 75% for parties containing Radiant. We could not independently confirm the live mixed-Radiant percentage. Check the party's in-client warning and ask Riot Support if the amount is unclear before relying on either figure.

Other reasons a rank-compatible party may be blocked

Competitive access is separate from rank compatibility. New players generally need Account Level 20. Riot introduced this requirement in Patch 4.0, with an exception for accounts that had already played Competitive before that change. If Morgan has not unlocked Competitive, filling the fifth slot does not solve that problem.

Platform also matters. According to the official console guide, PlayStation and Xbox players can play together, but console players cannot queue with PC players. PC and console have separate ranks and matchmaking ratings. If Alex's friends are on PC and Morgan is on PS5, their matching party size is insufficient.

If the client blocks an apparently eligible group, record the exact message and every player's current rank before contacting support. A rank chart cannot diagnose every account-specific restriction.

Play with friends without manipulating ranks

Do not use an old claim that Ascendant players can only five-stack with Platinum or higher. Riot removed the short-lived five-stack restriction in Patch 7.07.

Riot's July 2026 fair-play explanation explicitly permits five-stacking with friends of different ranks. It prohibits account sharing, borrowed or purchased accounts, and deliberately lowering ranks to manipulate matches.

For Alex's group, the choice is straightforward: Alex and Sam can duo now, or all five friends can play together once everyone is available and eligible. Before starting, agree on the RR tradeoff and use each person's own account.
