Is GTA 5 Free to Play Online? Costs by Platform

No, GTA 5 is not permanently free to play online. Its multiplayer component, GTA Online, requires a valid game entitlement: a purchased copy, an eligible subscription that includes access, or a specific promotional offer. On PC, an owned copy does not require a separate multiplayer subscription. On PlayStation and Xbox consoles, online play normally also requires the platform's paid multiplayer service.

The useful distinction is between paying for the game, paying for console multiplayer, and buying optional extras. An “Included” or “Download” button does not necessarily mean the game is free to keep.

PC and console access have different requirements, so check both the game license and any multiplayer subscription.

GTA Online costs at a glance

This table covers games installed on a PC or console. Cloud gaming services can have additional subscription requirements. Prices, catalog availability, and promotions vary by region.

PlatformGame access neededSeparate multiplayer subscription?
Windows PCA GTA V PC license that includes GTA Online, or eligible subscription accessNo separate multiplayer fee for an owned PC copy
PlayStation 4A compatible GTA V edition with GTA Online, or eligible catalog accessNormally PlayStation Plus
PlayStation 5GTA Online standalone, a GTA V bundle containing it, or eligible subscription accessNormally PlayStation Plus
Xbox OneA compatible GTA V edition with GTA Online, or eligible subscription accessNormally a Game Pass plan that includes console multiplayer
Xbox Series X|SGTA Online standalone, a compatible GTA V bundle, or eligible subscription accessNormally a Game Pass plan that includes console multiplayer

The platform requirements appear on the official PlayStation GTA V listing, Xbox One listing, and Xbox Series X|S GTA Online listing. Check the equivalent listing for your account's region before paying.

Playing on PC: no monthly multiplayer charge for an owned copy

If you own GTA V on PC through an authorized store, GTA Online is included with the relevant game package. You do not need PlayStation Plus, an Xbox console multiplayer plan, or GTA+ just to use the included PC multiplayer component.

The Rockstar Store PC package includes both GTA V Enhanced and GTA V Legacy. Its purchase option is separate from subscription access. Rockstar's Steam product page likewise lists the game purchase, online features, and optional GTA+ subscription separately.

You still need a supported computer, an internet connection, the required software, and a Rockstar Games account. Rockstar confirms the account requirement in its PC account requirements.

Before buying another edition to join friends, check which one they use. Enhanced and Legacy are separate multiplayer versions; the official Xbox announcement about the PC editions explains that friends must use the same edition. A subscription does not resolve an edition mismatch.

Playing on consoles: owning GTA V is only part of the cost

PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5

PlayStation's GTA listings specify PS Plus required for online play. Buying the game therefore does not, by itself, cover the normal console multiplayer requirement.

On PS5, you can choose the standalone GTA Online product if you only want multiplayer, or a bundle that also includes Story Mode. The official PS5 standalone listing identifies its contents and multiplayer requirement. Compare these before buying an additional Story Mode product or a currency bundle.

If you access GTA V through a PlayStation Plus catalog offer, check the required tier and availability period. Catalog access is tied to membership and game availability; Sony explains that games can leave the catalog on its PlayStation Plus page.

Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S

The Xbox listings name Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate for online console multiplayer. These are platform subscriptions, separate from GTA+.

A plan's multiplayer benefit and its game catalog are different benefits. Having console multiplayer does not automatically mean your plan includes GTA V. Check whether your account owns the correct game or has current catalog access, then confirm that your plan supports multiplayer. An installed game alone does not establish either entitlement.

Is GTA+ required, and does it include the game?

GTA+ is optional if you already have valid game access. Rockstar's GTA+ membership guidance describes a recurring membership available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC Enhanced. Its GTA Online benefits do not apply to PC Legacy.

However, saying GTA+ never includes the game would also be misleading. Rockstar's GTA+ Games Library lists GTA V and GTA Online among included titles, subject to platform and availability terms. This is paid subscription access, rather than a free permanent game license. Check which edition your membership provides.

On consoles, GTA+ does not replace the separately listed PlayStation Plus or Xbox multiplayer requirement. If your only game access comes from a subscription, check what happens when that subscription ends before canceling it.

Why some players say GTA 5 is free

Several different offers can produce that impression:

  • A historical giveaway: Epic offered GTA V free to claim and keep in May 2020. Its original announcement describes that limited promotion. It is not an ongoing offer for new accounts.
  • A platform launch promotion: GTA Online had a PS5 giveaway in 2022. The PlayStation launch announcement still specified a PlayStation Plus requirement.
  • Subscription inclusion: A catalog can let members download the game without a separate purchase, while membership fees and access conditions remain.
  • A free-play event: A trial can temporarily waive a purchase or multiplayer requirement. Only the terms of that specific event establish what is included and when access ends.

Before relying on any “free GTA Online” claim, find the original platform or Rockstar announcement and check its dates, region, edition, and subscription conditions. An old offer does not establish today's eligibility.

Checklist before you spend money

  • Check your library first. Confirm whether you already own a suitable edition or previously claimed a legitimate giveaway.
  • Read the package contents. Choose a product containing GTA Online for your platform; a Shark Card is virtual currency, not a game license.
  • Separate the recurring charges. Identify any console multiplayer subscription and distinguish it from optional GTA+ membership.
  • Check subscription access. If the game is included in a catalog, confirm the required plan and what happens when access ends.
  • Skip optional purchases unless you want them. PlayStation labels in-game purchases optional; buying virtual currency is not a basic entry requirement.
